Term 2 2010 President's Report

Unfortunately, bad weather caused the cancellation of several sailing days during term one – in fact, we lost a total of ten and a half sailing days for the term and our total number of clients was only 430 – we would have expected to have taken at least double that number of people sailing if the weather gods had been kind to us.On a brighter note, in the last week of term one, we took 64 people sailing on the Monday and 62 on the Thursday, or a total of 126 for the week – surely a record or Sailability Bayside. Well done to all our volunteers and helpers who made this possible.

The provision of a pontoon is “progressing”, w ith the Regional Harbour Master having given favourable response to the proposal. The Jetty Specialists, who are the builders of the pontoon, have advised that the formal application has been sent to the Port of Brisbane authorities, together with the approved engineered plans and structural advice certificates so hopefully we should see some action in the near future.

You will notice that we now have a new BBQ that is working well thanks to some TLC from Syd Woolley, and many thanks to Ian Reid for his kind donation of the BBQ in the first instance.

The repair program for the 303 dinghies is going well – many thanks to Bayside Boat Repairs for their efforts and also to East Coast Marina who lift and relaunch the boats at no charge – thank you both very much. Don Peverill and Bob Jackson have also been active in the minor repair department – thanks heaps Don and Bob.

The new Sunbusters shade tent, obtained by a dollar for dollar grant from the Queensland Government, is proving very popular and complements the two smaller tents that have been purchased by Bayside.

Carole Hovey has started a small library of sailing books that people are welcome to borrow if they want some light reading matter – “How to Sail Small Boats” should be pretty interesting!!!!!!

Rick Carroll organised a training/maintenance day on the Monday 3rd May public holiday that was well attended and went off very well, with training on the dinghies and the Rescue Boat as well as a couple of “fun” trips on Faith. I believe an excellent lunch was served by Carole Hovey and Dulcie Wilkie that was enjoyed by all (sorry I missed it). Well done and a big “thank you” to Carole, Dulcie and Rick.

A big thank you also to Alan Hrlec and the staff of IGA Manly for their donation of $600.00 – see photo on the front page. Thank you too to the Bayside Ladies Social Club who gave us a donation of $100.00.

Looking back at the term two report for last year I see we were handling about 40 clients on each sailing day, whereas we are now regularly handling 60+ most sailing days. My personal thanks go out to all of our volunteers who so selflessly give up their time for such a worthwhile cause as Sailability and I am sure these thanks are echoed by clients and carers as well.

Let’s hope the weather continues to improve and we get many more great days sailing at Sailability Bayside.
