Presidents Report

Sailability Bayside has had a very successful year as evidenced by the increased number of clients attending sailing days.We are presently catering for about 100 plus clients a week and one Thursday had 74 booked in – thankfully all of them didn't turn up, however I am sure we would have coped if they had.The highlight of the year was the presentation of the new 303 Dinghy the “Arty Booker” as a lasting memorial to one of our members who so tragically lost his life last year. The purchase of the boat was made possible by generous donations from friends, by fund-raising by the Jimboomba branch of the Veterans Support and Advocacy Service and the Brisbane Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, together with a donation from IGA as a result of volunteer Ian Reid's entry into their “Unsung Hero” competition.
A Lions’ “Thank You” day held in August was well attended by Bayside volunteers and members from Capalaba and Macgregor Lions Clubs who continue to support our organisation both financially and as volunteers.
Extensive renovations are underway to the downstairs area of the DPSS Clubhouse and have proved to be a great success so far. Most of the work carried out to date was done at a “combined users” working bee that was well attended by Bayside volunteers, among others. The rigging area was also re-grassed and gravel placed at
the end of the ramp, which has made boat handling much easier.
Following our petition to State Parliament and a meeting with the Deputy Premier, I am delighted to report that we have received advice from the Queensland Government that they will be providing a pontoon for use by Sailability and other organisations at the Darling Point Sailing Squadron, our home base. Our input will be
sought regarding the design of the pontoon and installation is expected to take place in the next 6-9 months. At the same time, we were also relieved to learn that the State Government would be extending the tenure of the DPSS (our Landlord) at the current Norfolk Point site for a period of three years, while a review is undertaken to determine the future of the area.
My personal thanks goes out to all our volunteers who so selflessly give up their time for such a worthwhile cause as Sailability and I am sure that these thanks are echoed by clients and carers as well –
thank you all.
